James Welburn
James Welburn was born circa 1853/1854 in the Blackwater community of the Baltimore Hundred district in Sussex County, Delaware. He is presumed to be Mary and George's third son to survive childhood. James is also presumed to be a twin of his sister Martha Welburn-Weldon.
The Welburns and many other residents of Blackwater and the Baltimore Hundred were overlooked during the 1860 U.S. Federal Census. As a result, James was never enumerated in any census with his parents. He made his first and only confirmed Federal Census appearance in 1870. He was 17 years old and employed as a tenant farm laborer for Roxana farmer Jerry Hudson.
Because he does not appear in the Baltimore Hundred tax records in the 1870s and was not enumerated ANYWHERE in the 1880 U.S. Federal Census, it is presumed for now that James Welburn died between 1870 and 1879 without a wife or children.
However, there is a "James Wilborn" of the approximate age and correct ethnicity residing at 546 Main St. in New Rochelle, Westchester County, New York in the 1905 NY State Census. Unfortunately his state of birth is not included, so he cannot be positively identified as our James Welburn at this time.
